Character Designs

I am illustrating a children's book for my mom's cousin Kathy. Over the past few years Kathy and her  grandson McKay wrote together a series of three books. A few months ago Kathy asked me to illustrate these books for her and then her plan is to give her grandson the printed/illustrated versions of these books as a gift. I thought it was a great idea and decided to help her out!

I started out by doing a rough pencil sketch and then decided that I will be able to work faster by doing everything digital. I have been working on these character builds all week and am thus far pretty pleased with how they are looking. A few minor changes will most likely happen as I start illustrating, but this at least give me a guideline and foundation to go by.

The stories are super cute and so to compliment the imagination used to create these stories I decided to go with a very simple yet effective way to paint the illustrations. I am using a chalk brush in Adobe Photoshop to paint under the character builds and simply 'colouring outside the lines' to give the child like look. I really like this look of illustrations and animation and I felt that it would work for this project!

As you will notice the characters changed a little when I did them digital but that is also to be expected. And! Of course the white lines in the pictures will not appear in the printed illustrations but those are jut my guides for now.
